Abstract
Mathematical optimization techniques are applied to find the most appropriate design for the superconducting bending magnets for the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). By this means a coil block arrangement for a 56 mm aperture is derived, having a considerably reduced multipole content compared to that obtained in previous design studies
