Abstract :
The author analyses the direct link between research and development and the long-term economic survival and growth of an organisation, and even the country in which it operates. The conclusion is that the UK cannot replace indigenously owned manufacturing industry by service industries or even foreign-owned manufacturing lines. Local R&D based manufacturing is essential to the wellbeing of `UK Ltd.´
