Abstract
Interactions between magnetically hard, premagnetized toner particles are analysed. The modelling is not limited to linear chains but extends to other configurations such as complete or partial rings of particles. The effect of the print medium substrate, when made of permeable material, is introduced in order to derive the contribution of magnetic interaction to undesired background development that may occur in unimaged areas. The toner chaining mechanisms on the medium are qualitatively supported by scanning electron microphotographs, while quantitative verification is achieved through comparison to experiments conducted on large scale physical models.
