Abstract
A new AFC principle for use in coherent optical DPSK systems is presented. The AFC uses a lock-in detection technique to lock the IF to the maximum baseband power level, where the best receiver sensitivity can be obtained. The AFC reduces the complexity of the high frequency electronics, it is universally applicable to any optical DPSK system irrespective of bit rate and actual IF, and it can also be used in CPFSK systems.
