Abstract
DINT, a data interpretation expert system which can provide an explanation of the real-time operating state of a substation to its operators, is described. DINT is based on a generalized version of the set covering model for diagnostic problem solving. This abductive reasoning model is an object-based, frame-like knowledge representation paradigm. Test cases illustrate the application of the model to the real-time operation of a substation.<>
