Abstract :
The authors examine the problems involved in the application of the Maxwell stress equations for finite-element force calculations on magnetised ferrous cores. They also study the effect of the tangential magnetic field strength Ht on the accuracy of the force calculation. An effective Ht value is presented that is based on the Ht values predicted on either side of an iron/air boundary. The effects of iron saturation, mesh discretisation, and solver type on the accuracy of the tangential force calculation are considered
