Abstract
The authors examine the problems involved in the application of the Maxwell stress equations for finite-element force calculations on magnetised ferrous cores. They also study the effect of the tangential magnetic field strength H t on the accuracy of the force calculation. An effective H t value is presented that is based on the H t values predicted on either side of an iron/air boundary. The effects of iron saturation, mesh discretisation, and solver type on the accuracy of the tangential force calculation are considered
