Abstract :
Normalised multimode rate equations are used to relate the number of lasing modes and the spontaneous-emission coupling coefficient. An almost linear relationship is found for ideal injection lasers with no reflections other than those of the end facets. The effect of small variations in mode losses is also discussed.
