انرژي به عنوان يك متغير ژئواستراتژيك، جايگاه ويژه‌اي را در روابط قدرت در نظام جهاني معاصر باز كرده و دسترسي به منابع انرژي براي تمامي سطوح سلسله مراتبي قدرت جهان، اهميتي استراتژيك پيدا كرده است. از اين روي، هر يك از بازيگران نظام جهاني به دنبال تعريفي معقول از جايگاه انرژي خود در جهان مي‌باشند. لذا ايران در پرتو توانمندي‌هاي چشمگيرش در حوزه انرژي، يك كانون توليد و مصرف و توزيع انرژي به شمار مي‌آيد. در اين ميان ايران با واقع شدن در مركز بيضي استراتژيك انرژي جهان و با در دست داشتن دومين منابع نفت خام و گاز طبيعي جهان، از جايگاه مهمي در زمينه تحولات انرژي جهاني برخوردار است. اين پژوهش بر آن است كه با روشي توصيفي - تحليلي و با تكيه بر داده‌هاي آمارهاي منتشر شده معتبر جهان به پرسش اصلي مقاله بر اين موضوع تاكيد دارد كه: «در چشم انداز جهاني عرضه و تقاضاي نفت و گاز، جايگاه انرژي ايران بر مبناي آمارهاي ارائه شده از سوي مراكز مختلف چگونه ارزيابي مي‌شود؟» فرضيه مقاله معطوف به گزاره امري است كه بر مبناي آمار ارائه شده از سوي مراكز مختلف، چشم انداز جهاني عرضه و تقاضاي نفت و گاز را بر اساس تشديد رقابت بر سر منابع انرژي و جايگاه ايران را نيز عليرغم تحريم‌هاي اعمال شده از سوي كشورهاي غربي، همچون گذشته حائز اهميت بسزايي در ميزان ذخاير، توليد و انتقال انرژي جهان قلمداد مي‌نمايد.
