آنچه از احياي بناهاي تاريخي معمولاً مورد انتظار است، اعطاي عملكرد جديد و انطباق و سازگاري فعاليتهاي انساني با كالبد معماري در قالب يك كاربري تعريف شده است. اين تلقي هرگاه با بنايي كه مورد تخريب اساسي قرار گرفته و امكان بازسازي آن وجود نداشته يا رجوع به وضعيت قبلي آن موضوعيت پيدا نمي كند، توام شود؛ احياي آن بنا نيز در هاله اي از ابهام قرار مي گيرد و در بعضي از موارد از احياء صرف نظر مي شود. اين مقاله سعي بر آن دارد تا نشان دهد يك بناي تاريخي، از زمان خلق تا زوال، فرصتهاي متفاوتي را جهت احياء به دست مي دهد كه با توجه به ويژگيهاي آن اثر، قابل احصاء است. ديدگاه براندي در حفاظت از اثر ميراثي كه سه زمان (زمان خلق اثر، زمان طي شده تاكنون و لحظه شناخت اثر در زمان حاضر) را براي آن قايل است و ارزشهاي متفاوتي را براي اثر ميراثي در نظر مي گيرد، زمين هاي را به وجود مي آورد كه به ويرانه هاي يك بناي تاريخي به مثابه يك كار هنري نگريسته شود و ارزش هاي مستتر در آن، موضوع احياء قرار گيرد. انجام برخي تجارب عملي دو دهه اخير در محلات تاريخي يزد، هر چند مستقل از اين آراء و به عنوان دريافته هايي كه در ميدان عمل به انجام رسيده اما به نوعي پيمايشي در جهت مشق اين ديدگاه و رويكرد خلاقه در زمينه حفاظت از ارزشهاي ميراثي نيز محسوب مي گردد و به خوبي مي تواند كارآمدي اين ديدگاه را در مواجهه با وضعيت زوال يك بناي تاريخي نشان دهد
