خروج بريتانيا از اتحاديه اروپا كه در پي يك همه‌پرسي در سال 2016 رخ داده پيامدهاي سياسي، اقتصادي و اجتماعي در پي خواهد داشت و برگزيت مي‌تواند اثرات مهمي در آينده اتحاديه اروپا بگذارد. برگزيت اثرات كوتاه مدت، ميان مدت و دراز مدت بر بريتانيا، اتحاديه اروپا و كل جهان خواهد گذاشت همان گونه كه در كوتاه مدت، خروج بريتانيا از اتحاديه اروپا، شوك‌هاي فراواني بر اقتصاد و بازارها واردكرد و موج جديدي از ملي گرايي افراطي و حملات عليه مهاجران و اقليت هاي نژادي را پديد آورد. در ميان مدت، برگزيت مي‌تواند واكنش دولت‌ها و مردم كشورهاي ديگر را برانگيزد و آن ها نيز خواهان همه پرسي براي خروج از اتحاديه اروپا بشوند كه نشانگان آن در كشورهايي همچون ايتاليا، يونان و هلند آشكار شده است. با ادامه اين روند، يورو، واحد پول مشترك اتحاديه اروپا بيشتر متاثر مي شود و اين موضوع مي‌تواند ماهيت يورو را تغيير دهد و كاهش سرمايه‌گذاري در اين منطقه را به دنبال داشته باشد كه حاصلي جز ركود براي اروپا و جهان نخواهد داشت. سوال اصلي اين مقاله آن است كه خروج بريتانيا از منظر حقوقي، ژئوپليتيكي و سياسي پيامدهاي سياسي و امنيتي چه تاثيراتي بر آينده اتحاديه اروپا خواهد داشت؟ فرضيه بدين ترتيب قابل طرح مي باشد كه خروج بريتانيا از اتحاديه اروپا باعث خواهد شد تا اين سازمان براي چندين سال با چالش چگونگي سازش با شرايط جديد در ابعاد حقوقي، ژئوپليتيكي سياسي، اقتصادي، تجاري مواجه باشد
