Evaluation of the ESP Book ‘English for the Students of Sociology

ارزيابي انتقادي كتاب‌هاي آموزش زبان گامي حياتي در تدوين برنامه‌هاي درسي است. اين نياز به‌ويژه براي مطالب و كتب تازه‌منتشرشده مشهود است. در نتيجه، در اين مقاله سعي شده است كتاب انگليسي براي اهداف ويژه با عنوان انگليسي براي دانشجويان جامعه‌شناسي، كه اخيراً محمدحسين كشاورز و موسي نوشي كوچك‌سرايي نوشته‌اند و انتشارات سمت در سال 2016 منتشر كرده، بررسي و ارزيابي شود. براي دست‌يابي به اين هدف، كتاب براساس مدل محمودي و احمدي صفا (1393) ارزيابي شد. مصاحبة نيمه‌ساختاريافته‌اي براساس مدل ذكرشده نيز براي بررسي ديدگاه متخصصان اين رشته، كه متخصصان جامعه‌شناسي بودند، درباب محتواي كتاب انجام شد. محققان با هفت متخصص در زمينة جامعه‌شناسي از دانشگاه‌هاي بوعلي‌سينا، ايلام، و گيلان مصاحبه كردند. نتايج نشان داد كه كتاب تازه‌ منتشر شده از سوي سمت در مقايسه با كتاب قبلي به‌طور چشم‌گيري بهبود يافته است. علاوه‌براين، يافته‌ها نشان داد كه عليرغم وجود برخي مشكلات در انتخاب فعاليت‌ها، تمرين‌ها، و متون، اين كتاب مناسب است و مي‌تواند به‌عنوان يك منبع انگليسي براي اهداف ويژه استفاده شود. محققان پيش‌نهادات مفيدي براي بهبود نواقص كتاب ارائه مي‌دهند.

Critical evaluation of language learning books is a vital step in a successful curriculum. The need is especially conspicuous for newly-published materials. Consequently, the present paper tried to explore and evaluate the ESP book entitled English for the Students of Sociology recently written by Mohammad Hossein Kesharvarz and Musa Nushi Kochaksaraie and published by SAMT in 2016. The paper critically examined the overall pedagogical value and suitability of the book. To achieve this goal, the book was evaluated based on Mahmoodi and Ahmadi Safa’s (2015) model. Semi-structured interviews based on the model were also conducted to delve into content teachers’ perspectives who were specialists in sociology. Seven experts in the field of sociology from Bu-Ali Sina, Ilam and Guilan universities were interviewed by the researchers. The results showed that the new book has improved quite dramatically compared to the previous book published by SAMT. Moreover, the findings revealed that in spite of some deficiencies in the selection of the activities, exercises, and texts, the book is suitable and can be used as an ESP source. The researchers provide some useful suggestions for improving the shortcomings of the book.
