جنگ داخلي سوريه كه در 7 سال گذشته مهم‌ترين بحران خاورميانه لقب گرفته، اين منطقه را به صحنه رقابت و تقابل قدرت‌هاي منطقه‌اي و فرامنطقه‌اي تبديل كرده است. گستردگي جغرافياي منازعه، حجم بالاي خسارت وارده، وقوع خشونت‌هاي بسيار شديد و نيز حضور مستقيم و غير مستقيم تعداد بي‌شماري از بازيگران نظام بين‌الملل در صحنۀ نبردهاي عملياتي موجب شده است تا از اين بحران به‌عنوان يكي از نمونه‌هاي منحصر به‌فرد در يك دهه اخير ياد شود. ماهيت پديده‌هاي بين‌المللي نشان داده است كه قدرت‌هاي بزرگ در يك ساختار چندجانبه، به موازات همكاري و رقابت، درصدد تبيت موازنه قدرت در محيط بين‌المللي هستند. با وقوع بحران در سوريه نشانه‌هايي از اين نوع روابط ميان روسيه و ايالات متحده از سال 2011 مشاهده شده است. روسيه طي سال‌هاي اخير بازيگر اصلي در سوريه بوده و در ميان بازيگران خارجي در سوريه قوي‌ترين طرف بوده است، اما در طرف مقابل ايالات متحده هم با داشتن ابزارهاي متعدد و به بهانه مقابله با خطر داعش و جلوگيري از نفوذ ايران در سوريه در اين كشور بحران زده به ايفاي نقشي پرداخته است كه هم‌سو با منافع روسيه نبوده است. به اين ترتيب تقابلي آشكار و پنهان بين روسيه و آمريكا در سوريه پديد آمده است.
