منابع كنوني زبان انگليسي نيازهاي دانشجويان پزشكي را برآورده نمي سازند: بررسي واژه هاي منابع و سوال هاي زبان انگليسي امتحان جامع علوم پايه پزشكي

Current English Language References Do Not Satisfy Medical Students’ Needs: A study on the Vocabulary of the English Language References and Questions in the Comprehensive Examination of Basic Medical Sciences in Iran

با توجه به اهميت زبان انگليسي براي دانشجويان پزشكي، اين پژوهش با هدف بررسي شاخص هاي واژگاني در منابع و سوال هاي زبان انگليسي امتحان جامع علوم پايه پزشكي در ايران انجام گرفت. مواد و روش ها: بعد از گردآوري متون منابع و دسته بندي واژگان آن ها، متون نهايي از لحاظ پوشش واژگان، اندازه واژگان، و سطح واژگان بررسي شدند. همچنين، پوشش واژگان پنج آزمون زبان انگليسي امتحان جامع علوم پايه پزشكي در اين منابع بررسي شد. يافته ها: نتايج بررسي 89،021 واژه متشكل از 9،683 نوع واژه و 5،938 واژه-خانواده نشان داد كه واژگان كاكسهد (Coxhead) پوشش 27/6% و واژگان سو (Hsu) پوشش 11/6% در منابع زبان انگليسي امتحان جامع علوم پايه پزشكي داشتند. واژگان هيچكدام از 5 آزمون زبان انگليسي امتحان جامع پوشش 98 درصدي در منابع نداشتند. اندازه واژگان پنج منبع 5،938 واژه-خانواده بود كه با معيار حداقل 8000 واژه-خانواده اي فاصله زيادي داشت. همچنين، واژگان پنج منبع در سطح 14 قرار داشتند. بحث و نتيجه گيري: با توجه به نتايج اين پژوهش، به نظر مي رسد كه منابع زبان انگليسي امتحان جامع علوم پايه پزشكي نيازهاي دانشجويان پزشكي را از جمله گذراندن آزمون زبان انگليسي امتحان جامع و خواندن و درك مطلب متون پزشكي به زبان انگليسي برآورده نمي كنند. بنابراين، معرفي منابع بيشتر زبان انگليسي با شاخص هاي واژگاني بالاتر از طرف وزارت بهداشت يا حداقل از طرف مدرس مربوطه پيشنهاد مي گردد.

Background & Objective: Given the importance of the English language for medical students, this study investigated the lexical characteristics in the English language references and tests of the Comprehensive Examination of Basic Medical Sciences (CEBMS) in Iran. Materials and Methods: After the texts of the references were collected and their words were classified, the final texts were analyzed for lexical coverage, vocabulary size and vocabulary level. The lexical coverage of five CEBMS English language tests in the references was also surveyed. Results: Surveying 89,021 tokens (running words) consisting of 9,683 word types and 5,938 word families showed the lexical coverage of 6.27% for Coxhead's word list and 6.11% for Hsu's word list in the English language references of the CEBMS. The vocabulary in none of the five CEBMS English language tests had the 98% lexical coverage in the references. The vocabulary size in the five references included 5,938 word families, which was much lower than the threshold of at least 8,000 word families. Also, the vocabulary level of the five references was at Level 14. Conclusion: Considering the results of this study, it seems that the English language references of the CEBMS do not satisfy medical students' needs including passing the English language test of the CEBMS and comprehending medical texts in English. Therefore, it is recommended that more English language references with higher lexical characteristics should be introduced by the Iranian Ministry of Health or at least by the relevant instructor.
