در شكل‌گيري سيماي شهر تبريز در عهد ناصرالدين‌شاه قاجار (1313/ 1264­ق)، علاوه بر عوامل اقليمي، اقتصادي و سياسي، مؤلفه‌هاي فرهنگي همچون دين، عادات و رسوم، پنهان‌كاري ناشي از وضعيت سياسي، اجتماعي و فرهنگ بيگانه به‌صورت آشكار و پنهان اثرگذار بوده‌ است. لذا، بافت كالبدي شهر تا حدودي متأثر از فرهنگ و مؤلفه‌هاي فرهنگي اين دوران است. اين تأثير و تأثر سيماي شهر در اين دوره را ترسيم مي‌كند. پژوهش حاضر با روش توصيفي ـ تحليلي در پي مطالعۀ اين مؤلفه‌ها و تبيين نقش آن در شكل‌گيري سيماي ظاهري شهر تبريز و پاسخ به اين پرسش است كه آيا مي‌توان عوامل فرهنگي را در شكل‌گيري سيماي تبريز در اين مقطع زماني مؤثر دانست. با بررسي اطلاعات موجود چنين به­نظر مي‌رسد كه مؤلفه‌هايي مانند «پنهان‌كاري» ناشي از ناامني‌هاي متعدد و پرشمار، فرهنگ ديني، عادات و رسوم عمومي، نقشي پنهان بر نحوۀ احداث منازل و محلات تبريز داشته؛ درنتيجه بر شكل‌گيري بافت كالبدي و سيماي ظاهري شهر تأثيرگذار بوده است.
