كليله‌ و ‌دمنه از جمله كتاب‌هايي است كه از ديرباز مورد توجه فرهنگ‌هاي مختلف قرار گرفته-است. به‌همين جهت مترجمان مختلفي با دخل و تصرف در اين كتاب، آن را متناسب با فرهنگ و ادبيات قوم خود تغيير داده‌اند. يكي از مشهورترين ترجمه‌هاي اين كتاب، داستان‌هاي بيدپاي از محمدبن‌عبدالله بخاري است. در اين مقاله، به روش تحليلي- مقايسه‌اي متن داستان‌هاي بيدپاي با متن عربي ابن‌مقفع مقايسه شده، مواردي كه عبدالله بخاري به ‌هر دليلي از عهدة ترجمه آن به‌خوبي برنيامده، مشخص و تحليل شده است. هرچند امكان دارد برخي از اين سهوها از جانب نساخان و يا مصححان داستان‌هاي بيدپاي يا متن عربي ابن‌مقفع بوده باشد. در برخي موارد براي روشن شدن مطلب از ترجمة فارسي نصرالله منشي و پنجاكيانه نيز كمك گرفته ‌شده‌است. طبيعي است كهگاهي اضافات يا حذفياتي از قبيل حكايت يا بابي در داستان‌هاي بيدپاي نسبت به متن عربي مشهود است كه مورد توجه اين مقاله نيست. در مجموع مي‌توان علاوه بر دخل و تصرف و سهو‌هاي نساخان، محمدبن عبدالله بخاري در برخي موارد متن عربي درست نديده و يا به درستي ترجمه نكرده است.
