Power System Restructuring

The electrical industry is restructuring around the globe where different models are being proposed in different countries. The main goal of power system restructuring is deregulation and promoting competition. Competition is brought about through industry restructuring, unbundling and private sector participation/investment. Due to Varying Socio-economic standing of each country, objectives of achieving competitiveness are not the same. The reasons for shifting the electricity industry from traditional structure of regulated-monopoly to competition may vary from country to country. The main reasons of this changing are: to reduce cost of electricity, to increase efficiency, to encourage private sector investments, customer choice and so on. The desires to reduce cost of electricity and to increase efficiency in the industry are two main reasons for reforms. While for developing countries another important reason is to encourage private sector investment in the industry and to relieve financial burdens of the government. In this paper, the main concepts of power system restructuring and deregulation have been explained. Then, At the end, the trends and experiences of power system restructuring in some countries have been shown.
