An Overview of DC Transmission Systems Based on Voltage Source Converters

HVDC systems are traditionally used to transmit large amount of highvoltage electrical power over long distances. These systems use thyristor bridges which absorb reactive power and rely on the external AC source for commutation In the recent years, a new type of DC transmission systems based on voltage source converters and self turn off switches is developed. These systems are suitable for transmitring low to moderate powers, and hence are called HVDC Light. This paper discusses the advantages and applications of HVDC Light, as well as its structure. Modeling and Control of the system are then explained and sample simulation results are presented.
