انسان در پيرامون خود با اسامي اشخاص، مكان ها، حيوانات، نباتات، اشيا وغيره سر و كار دارد كه علت نامگذاري بسياري از اين اسم ها بر او پوشيده است. يكي از مسايلي كه ذهن كنجكاو بشر را به خود مشغول كرده است، يافتن ارتباط حقيقي بين اسم و مسمي است كه از آن، تعبير به وجه تسميه مي كنند. وجه تسميه در متون ادبي بازتاب بسيار گسترده اي دارد و از جنبه هاي گوناگون و از جمله تمثيل، قابل بررسي است. مسلم است كه تمثيل، همچون ابزاري نيرومند و تاثير گذار، همواره در متون ادبي و بويژه عرفاني، سبب خلق تخييلات و تمثيلات فراواني شد و آثاري ارزشمند و بديع در اين زمينه به جا گذاشته است. در اين مقاله، نگارنده بر آن است تا هنر و خلاقيت شاعران و نويسندگان ادب فارسي كه با استفاده از ابزار وجه تسميه، در پروراندن تمثيل ها و نمادها نقش اساسي ايفا كردند، شرح و بسط نمايد.
