It could be said that historians are the bibliographers of time, careful readers
who catalogue events and their ‘authors’ according to date and place in
order to form the coherent and meaningful sequence we call history, curating
‘collections’ of the past. Farhad Daftary (b. 1938) is both historian and
bibliographer, possessed of the shared traits of these vocations: a synthetic
ability to structure data, fuelled by a curiosity that delves into neglected
areas, and an attention to detail never less than meticulous, with a memory
to match.
