Mental health is defined as lack of psychological disorders and a state of well-being. Accordingly, one of the most serious efforts of World Health Organization (WHO) is to reduce the incidence of psychological disorders and problems. Financial and social burdens of mental health probems in a society have a heavy pressure on every government in most countries. Nobody can deny the functional deficiency and insufficient economical productivity in psychological disordered population. Considering this fact that, unfortunately, a very great portion of youth population suffered from different types of mental health problems in every portion of youth population suffered from different types of mental health problems in every society. So, it is essential that governments should have a comprehensive and great emphasis in this matter. The research shows that unfortunately many university students are too vulnerable to these problems. For these reasons, mental health programmes and projects.
The main purpose of this study is to assess the mental health state especially depression rate in students in Tonekabon Azad Islamic University. The population of this study consisted of the clinical psychology students who were accepted in this Tonekabon University in 1379. The sample includes 120 students (60 male & 60 female) who were recruited randomly from our statistical population. The instrument was Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).
The results showed that 29.82% of students were depressed that among this group the severity of their depression was: 19.1% mild depression, 6.66% moderate depression, 3.33% severe depression, and 0.83% very severe depression. The mean of depression among female students was higher than male students (9.8, 6.5) which was statistically significant (P<0.05). Also, the mean of depression among single students was higher than married students (3.2, 5.4) that were significant (P<0.01). The mean of depression among non-native students was significantly higher than native students (4, 6.4).
We suggested some interventional models for prevention and treatment in this subject. Many universities in other countries are applying these models to promote mental health in their students. It can be considered that we can use the compiling of these models and strategies in our countries. We introduced some of these interventional models in our paper.
