The Role of Cancer Stem Cells in malignancies: Properties, Function and Origin

امروزه با پيشرفت دانش محققين در زمينه زيست‌شناسي سلول­هاي بنيادي و نقش كليدي آن­ها در ايجاد ارگانيسم­هاي چند سلولي پيچيده، اهميت سلول­هاي بنيادي در گسترش تومورها پررنگ تر شده است. پيشنهاد شده كه سلول­هايي با خصوصيات سلول­هاي بنيادي به نام سلول­هاي بنيادي سرطان (CSCs) در ايجاد و گسترش انواعي از سرطان­هاي انساني دخيل هستند. هدف از اين مقاله مروري بررسي ويژگي­هاي CSC ها در سرطان، عملكردشان، منشأ و تفاوتشان با سلول­هاي بنيادي مي­باشد. روش كار: در اين مطالعه مروري، جستجو در پايگاه­هاي اطلاعاتي الكترونيكي و علمي,Google scholar ,Scopus, PubMed Medline و ISI انجام شد و مقالات معتبر مرتبط با موضوع مورد استفاده قرار گرفت. يافته‌ها: CSC ها، ريز جمعيت سلولي در تومورها هستند كه توانايي خودنوسازي و توليد دودمان­هاي ناهمگوني از سلول­هاي سرطاني مولد تومور را دارا هستند. پيشنهاد مي شود اين سلول‌ها در تومورها، جمعيت متفاوت هستند و به‌عنوان هسته تومور مطرح مي‌باشند كه باعث عود، متاستاز و گسترش تومورهاي جديد مي­شوند. همچنين ثابت شده است كه در تومورها باعث ايجاد مقاومت به شيمي درماني نيز مي‌گردند. نتيجه‌گيري: مشخص‌شده است كه CSC ها يا سلول­هاي آغازكننده تومور عامل اصلي در مقاومت درماني و عود سرطان هستند. بنابراين، پيشرفت روش­هاي درماني بر پايه CSC ها، اميد جديدي را براي افزايش بقا و بهبود كيفيت زندگي در بيماران مبتلابه سرطان به وجود آورده است. لذا، توانايي در جداسازي و تعيين خصوصيت اين سلول‌ها منجر به توليد داروهاي جديدي مي‌گردد كه CSC ها را مورد هدف قرار مي­دهند.

Introduction: Nowadays, the advancement of researchers' knowledge in the field of stem cell biology and its key role in the creation of complex multicellular organisms, the importance of stem cells in the development of tumors has become more significant. It has been suggested that cells with stem cell characteristics called cancer stem cells (CSCs) are involved in the development and spread of human cancers. The objective of this review is to consider the properties of CSCs, function, origin and the difference between CSCs and stem cells. Methods: In this review, the search was done in electronic and scientific databases including Scopus, PubMed, Google scholar, Medline and ISI. The related papers were used. Results: CSCs are a subpopulation in tumors that have the ability to self-renew and produce heterogeneous lines of cancer-producing tumor cells. CSCs are proposed to persist in tumors as a distinct population and they are core of tumor. They cause relapse and metastasis by giving rise to new tumors. Also, it has been demonstrated that CSCs are the cause of chemotherapy resistance. Conclusion: It has been shown that CSCs or tumor-initiating cells are the main cause of cancer resistance and relapse. Therefore, the advancement of CSC-based therapies has created a new hope for increasing survival and improving the quality of life in cancer patients. So, the ability to isolate and characterize these cells leads to the production of new drugs targeting CSCs.
