زبان‌شناسان شناختي برداشت تازه‌اي از استعاره را ارائه كرده‌اند كه با مفهوم سنتي آن متفاوت است. اين برداشت از استعاره را نخستين بار، ليكاف و جانسون معرفي كردند. در اين برداشت تازه، استعاره ديگر واحدي برحسب مشابهت با واحدي ديگر جايگزين نميشود بلكه، نوعي ساخت اسنادي است و قبلا بر اساس تجربه حسي در ذهن ثبت شده است. براي مثال، استعاره زباني «عاشق، كوله‌باري از رنج بر دوش دارد» بازنمود يك استعاره مفهومي ثبت شده در ذهن مان است كه: «عشق، سفر است». استعاره‌هاي مفهومي به سه دسته: جهتي، هستي شناختي، ساختاري تقسيم مي‌شوند. اين مقاله بر آن است تا استعاره مفهومي را تشريح كرده و چگونگي ورود آن به زبان شعر نو را بر اساس نمونه‌هاي متعددي تحليل كند و آنگاه به تحليل و تطبيق استعاره‌هاي مفهومي در نمونه‌هايي از اشعار خانم غادة السمّان شاعر پرآوازه سوري ‌بپردازد. در اين ميان، ارزش تصويري اشعار غادة السمان و هنجارگريزي در شعر وي نيز به روش توصيفي ـ تحليلي بررسي مي‌شود. مهم‌ترين دستاورد اين مقاله را مي‌توان اثبات حضور پررنگ استعاره‌‌هاي مفهومي در شعر غادة السمان و تحليل تصويرشناسانه اين اشعار و تاثير محيط زيست عربي شاعر، بر شعر وي دانست و اين كه صحرا به عنوان تصوير مركزي و محوري شعر وي محسوب مي‌شود.
