در زبان‌شناسي ساختگرا تنها جمله و روابط بين اجزاي آن بررسي مي‌شود. در اين رويكرد زبان پديده‌اي ذهني و درون‌فردي است. در مقابل، گروهي ديگر زبان را پديده‌اي اجتماعي و ابزاري جهت ايجاد ارتباط مي‌دانند كه بر اساس آن ضرورت بررسي متن و رابطه‌ي زبان با موقعيت اجتماعي مطرح مي‌شود كه خود زمينه‌‌ساز پيدايش رويكرد «‌زبان‌شناسي متن» بوده است. ويژگي اساسي متن، توالي و پيوستگي اجزاي آن است كه «انسجام» نام دارد. هليدي عوامل انسجام‌بخش متن را شامل عوامل واژگاني و نحوي دانسته است. انسجام واژگاني به دو روش تكرار و باهم‌آيي صورت مي‌گيرد كه خود انواع مختلفي دارد. بسياري از فنون لفظي بديع از انواع تكرارند. همچنين برخي از فنون معنوي در شمار انواع باهم‌آيي قرار مي‌گيرند كه مي‌توانند در انسجام متن نقش مؤثري را ايفا كنند. بر اين اساس مي‌توان كاركرد فنون بديعي را علاوه بر تحسين و زيبايي، انسجام‌بخشي به متن نيز دانست كه در شعر نو ظهور و بروز بيشتري يافته است. در اين مقاله فنون بديعي در شعر نو از اين ديدگاه بررسي شده است.

In structural linguistics, only sentence and relations between components are studied. Accordingly, language is subjective and intrapsychological phenomenon. But, language is considered social phenomenon and an instrument for communication by the other some. The necessity of text survey and relationship between language and social status has provided "the text linguistics". Basic text characteristic is sequence and continuity of its component that is called cohesion. According to Holyday devises of cohesion consist of verbal and syntactic elements. Verbal cohesion takes place in two ways, repetition and collocation that have different types. Many figures of diction are considered repeat types. Also, some of the figures of thought are of collocation types that have effective role in text creation. On this basis, figures of speech function is made text coherent in additional beautification. The role of the coherence of a figurative device is another function that helps to produce text, which is more clearer in modern poetry.
