Background & Objectives: The family system has been confronted with new challenges and issues as a result of the social changes of the past decades globally; it has therefore become increasingly threatened. The gradual disintegration of marital life functions, such as sociobiological,
cognitive, and emotional aspects of couples leads to a serious reduction in marital satisfaction. Moreover, women are considered the main pillar of social development and the central focus of family health. Women play essential roles in the family and society. Numerous characteristics are
involved in the continuation of marital life and the basic condition for this is the adaptation to stressful stimuli. Furthermore, unfriendly
relationships and marital satisfaction affect couples' biopsychological health. Marital satisfaction is among the factors that significantly impact
marital stability and family system stability; it is also a basis for parental relationships. Marital satisfaction is a personal experience in a marriage
that can only be assessed by the individual in response to the degree of enjoying marital relationships. Marital conflict affects couples'
psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression. The current study aimed to determine the effects of Acceptance and Commitment
Therapy (ACT) on emotional failure, marital satisfaction, and Emotion Regulation (ER) in women referring to the social emergency department.
Methods: This was an experimental study with a pretest–posttest and a control group design. The statistical population of this study consisted
of all women referring to the social emergency department in Noshahr City, Iran, from October 2018 to December 2018. Using the convenience
sampling method, the study subjects were chosen among those who obtained high scores in questionnaires concerning emotional failure and ER.
They were randomly divided into the test and control groups (n=15/group). The experimental group received eight 90–minute weekly sessions
of ACT; however, the controls received no intervention. The instruments used in this study included the Ross Love Impulse Questionnaire
(1999), Enrich’s Marital Satisfaction Scale (1989), and Gross’s and John’s Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (2003). Besides, after the
completion of the study, a more effective treatment was administered to the control group. Statistical data were analyzed using one–way Analysis
of Covariance (ANCOVA).
Results: The obtained results indicated the effectiveness of ACT on emotional failure (F=118.82, p<0.001), marital satisfaction (F=249.48,
p<0.001), and ER (F=89.89, p<0.001) in the study participants.
Conclusion: According to the present research results, ACT was effective on emotional failure, marital satisfaction, and ER in the studied women; thus, it can be used to empower women with marital problems.
