After five years of growth culminating in the record performance of 2017, the Italian ceramic machinery industry experienced
a contraction in 2018. While remaining above the 2 billion euro mark, revenue dropped by 3.5% to 2.158 billion euros. Sales of plant and machinery to the domestic Italian market saw only a relatively small decline (-1.3%) and remained at very high levels (573 mil-lion euros compared to the 580 million euros of 2017). Exports suffered a bigger fall, dropping from 1.656 to 1.585 billion euros (-4.3%). The number of companies decreased slightly (143 compared to 148 in 2017), while the number of employees fell by 5.1% to 6,905.
