A Review of the Chapter on “Structuralism and Semiotics” in the Routledge Companion to Critical and Cultural Theory

ساختارنگري يكي از مهم‌ترين جنبش‌هاي فكري سدۀ بيستم است كه خاستگاه آن به نظريۀ زبان‌شناسي و نشانه‌شناسي فردينان دو سوسور برمي‌گردد. توجه به ساختار موجود در پس پديده‌هاي فرهنگي و كشف و دسته‌بندي قواعد كلي حاكم بر آن ساختارها هدف اصلي ساختارنگران است. با گذشته چند دهه از ظهور ساختارنگري در علوم انساني و وارد آمدن نقدهاي اساسي بر مفروضات و روش آن، اين روي‌كرد همچنان اهميت خود را، به‌خصوص در نقد ادبيات و فرهنگ، حفظ كرده است و در تمام كتاب‌هاي راهنما و درس‌نامه‌هايي كه در حوزۀ نظريۀ ادبيات منتشر مي‌شوند همواره فصلي به اين جنبش دوران‌ساز اختصاص مي‌يابد. يكي از مشهورترين اين كتاب‌ها راهنماي راتلج به نظريۀ نقد ادبيات و فرهنگ است، كه ويراست دوم آن در سال 2013 منتشر شد. جستار حاضر به نقد و بررسي فصل «ساختارنگري و نشانه‌شناسي» اين كتاب مي‌پردازد و پس از اشاره‌اي كوتاه به قوت آن (خوش‌خوان بودن و جنبۀ آموزشي قوي) ضعف‌ها و كاستي‌هاي نظري و ساختاري آن بحث مي‌شوند، كه جا داشت در ويراست دوم (كه تفاوتي با متن اين فصل در چاپ نخست كتاب ندارد) برطرف شوند.

Structuralism is one of the most influential intellectual movements in the twentieth century, which has its roots in Ferdinand de Saussure’s linguistic and semilogical theory. The primary objective of Structuralism is to focus on the structures underlying various cultural phenomena and identify the general rules governing them. Although decades have passed since the advent of Structuralism and serious criticisms have been addressed at its basic assumptions and methodology, it still remains significant, especially within literary and cultural theory, such that in all guidebooks and textbooks of literary theory one chapter is always devoted to Structuralism. One of these books is the second edition of The Routledge Companion to Critical and Cultural Theory (2013). The present essay reviews the chapter entitled “Structuralism and Semiotics” in this guidebook, first briefly pointing out its advantages (its readability and pedagogic quality) and then highlighting its theoretical and structural disadvantages, which should have been minimized in the second edition (which is no different from the first).
