جنگ جهاني اول در 28 ژوييه 1914 هشت روز پس از تاجگذاري احمد شاه قاجار در شرايطي آغاز شد كه ايران مبتلا به هرج و مرجي كم سابقه در تاريخ معاصر بود. بهار مشروطه و مجلس شوراي ملي با استبداد محمد علي شاه به پايان رسيده بود و جزء گروه هاي مختلف درگير در سطوح محلي و ملي چيزي زيادي به جا نگذاشته بود، از سوي ديگر، به تخت نشستن احمد شاه نوجوان و تضعيف بيش از پيش دولت مركزي، ايران را عملا به حكومتي خان خاني بدل كرده بود. دولت توان جمع آوري ماليات را نداشت و خزانه هر روز خالي تر از قبل مي شد. با توجه به اهميت شناخت دقيق از اوضاع ايران در آستانه جنگ جهاني اول، پژوهش حاضر به روش كتابخانه اي، با تكيه بر اسناد متعبر و با رويكردي توصيفي، تحليلي در تلاش است تصويري شفاف از اوضاع ايران در آستانه جنگ جهاني اول و همچنين تاثير جنگ بر تجارت مشهد را ارايه دهد. روشن نمودن وضعيت اجتماعي ايران طي سالهاي جنگ، برخي ديگراز نتايج پژوهش مي باشد. هدف از پژوهش، تبيين و بررسي اوضاع ايران در آستانه جنگ جهاني اول مي باشد. ؛ آشفتگي ايران در آستانه جنگ و تنازع قدرت ها، كاهش سطح داد و ستد بازرگاني در حوزه شرق ايران و كاهش درآمد گمركات ايران از نتايج پژوهش مي باشد.

World War I began on July 28, 1914, eight days after the coronation of Ahmad Shah Qajar, at a time when Iran was experiencing unprecedented chaos in contemporary history. The spring of the constitution and the National Assembly had ended with the tyranny of Mohammad Ali Shah, and the various groups involved at the local and national levels had left little to be desired.
