جمعي از عالمان اهل‌سنت از طريق ابن‌مسعود از رسول خدا حديثي نقل كرده‌اند كه نشان مي‌دهد پدر امام مهدي همنام پدر رسول گرامي اسلام يعني عبدالله است. عالمان شيعه براساس اخباري كه در اختيار دارند، ترديد ندارند كه پدر امام مهدي امام حسن عسكري است. و برخي از عالمان اهل‌سنت نيز در اين مسئله با عالمان شيعه هم عقيده‌اند. اما بيشتر آنان براساس يكي از نقل‌هاي حديث ابن‌مسعود از رسول خدا كه در آن درباره امام مهدي آمده: «اسمه اسمي و اسم ابيه اسم ابي» نام پدر امام مهدي را عبدالله دانسته و مهدي موعود را شخصي غير از فرزند امام حسن عسكري دانسته‌اند. اما از آن‌جا كه محدثان شيعه و اكثر محدثان اهل‌سنت حديث ابن‌مسعود را فقط با تعبير «اسمه اسمي» نقل كرده‌اند، نشان مي‌دهد زياده «اسم ابيه اسم ابي» از پايه و اساس درستي برخودار نيست. به ويژه آن‌كه برخي از عالمان اهل‌سنت مانند گنجي شافعي زياده فوق را ساخته فردي به نام زائده دانسته است و معتقد است ديگر راويان حديث مورد نظر كه شمار آنان به 35 نفر مي‌رسد، حديث ياد شده را فقط با تعبير «اسمه اسمي» نقل كرده‌اند كه هماهنگ با ديدگاه عالمان شيعه است.
