آموزه‌هاي عبيد زاكاني در اخلاق الأشراف از دامنه گسترده‌اي از دانش مانند آثار ادبي، تاريخي، تفاسير قرآن و متون عرفاني، كتب اخلاقي و آثار فلسفي سرچشمه گرفته و عبيد در ترسيم اخلاقِ «مذهب منسوخ» و «مذهب مختار» در رسالۀ خود با خلاقيت و آزادي از آن­ها بهره برده است. او گاه اين منابع را چنان دگرگون كرده كه از آن­ها تنها صورتي ضعيف برجاي مانده است و گاهي هم به ويژه در بهره ­گيري از منابع اخلاقي، نهايت دقت را در رعايت امانت به كار برده است. عبيد زاكاني از متن­هايي اخلاقي و عرفاني و ادبي مانند تهذيب الاخلاق ابن مسكويه، احياء علوم الدين غزالي، اخلاق ناصري خواجه نصير طوسي و گلستان سعدي بيشترين تأثير را پذيرفته است.
