سر ريدر بولارد سياست مدار مشهور انگليسي به دليل مناصب متعددي كه در ميان كشورهاي مسلمان خاورميانه در سالهاي نيمه اول قرن بيستم داشت يكي از مهم ترين شخصيت هاي سياسي است كه براي شناخت جوامع اسلامي در آن برهه زماني از آثار و خاطرات او مي توان بهره برد. او مشاغل و ماموريت‌هاي مختلفي در كشورهاي عثماني(پيش از فروپاشي) عراق ، عربستان و ايران داشت و علاوه بر گزارش هاي سياسي نگاهي نيز به مسائل اجتماعي كشورهاي اسلامي داشته است. آثار بولارد كه جنبه هاي تاريخ سياسي و اجتماعي را مي توان در آنها يافت، تصويري نو از كشورهاي اسلامي در آستانه قرن بيستم را نمايان مي سازد. بنابراين هدف اين پژوهش باز شناسايي ايران و همسايگانش از ديد بولارد به عنوان يك سفير و در مواردي يك شرق شناس است. روش پژوهش كتابخانه اي است و بر اساس منابع دست اول و اصلي كه آثار و نوشته هاي بولارد است تهيه شده است و يافته هاي پژوهش نشان مي دهد كه از جنبه‌ي سياسي مساله آلمان و گرايش كشورهاي منطقه به سياست هاي آلمان به عنوان نيروي سوم غير از روس و انگليس بر سرنوشت اين كشورها تاثير فراواني داشته است. از نظر اجتماعي اين جوامع از دو پارگي فرهنگي و اجتماعي رنج مي برده‌اند، به نوعي سنت و مدرنيته در مقابل يكديگر قرار گرفته و اين تقابل محصول برخورد با انديشه هاي غرب و نوسازي هايي بود كه همه ي گروههاي اجتماعي را در اين مناطق در گير خود نموده بود.
