EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF POST- PRANDIAL HYPER-TRIGLYCERIDEMIA ON PLASMA LIPOPROTEIN (a)LEVELS IN NORMOLIPIDEMIC PATIENTS

Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a cholesterol-rich particle in human plasma. It has been recognized as an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of postprandial hypertriglyceridemia in normolipidemic subjects . This descriptive study was conducted in 2001 at the Biochemistry Dept. of Yazd University of medical sciences. The study group included 115 normal subjects (60 females, 55 males) with a mean age of 36.7 years. Blood samples were drawn in fasting and postprandial state. The cholesterol and triglyceride levels were measured at the same time and Lp(a) assay was done after collection of all samples at -70ʹC . Plasma Lp(a) levels did not correlate significantly with age, sex, lipid risk factors and there were no differences between the fasting and postprandial state. in dislipidemic patients , high plasma triglycerides levels have a negative effect on Lp(a) concentrations. This effect may be due to the increased clearance of triglyceride rich lipoprotein or interference with Lp(a) assay. In normolipidemic state, moderate increase in plasma triglyceride levels has no effect on plasma Lp(a) levels.
