EVALUATION OF LEARNING AND MEMORY IN MICE WHOSE MOTHERS HAD CONSUMED BOSWELLIA DURING LACTATIONARY PERIOD

Learning and memory are among the most important Behavioral processes. Memory is the ability to remember the past experiences in the concious or non-concious states. These processes involve permanent modification of central nervous system due to environmental input informations and its intrinsic activity. Attention to memory and its processing is not a matter of this century, but its importance has been mentioned since ancient times. In ancient Iranian herbal medicine, Boswellia Rezin was known to enhance learning & memory. We therefore conducted an experimental study to evaluate learning and memory in mice whose mothers had consumed Boswellia SPP Rezin during their lactationary period. In this study,we added %l B. Rezinte to food plates of labored mice during 8weeks of lactation and then learning and memory was evaluated in their male offsprings by using shattel box devices. Experiments were done in three stages; learning (first week) short term memory (2 th week) and long term memory (6 th week). For each animal in each stage, 90 trials were examined and the number of trials in which the animal left the dark side of the shattel box without receiving an electrical shock was recorded and the data from animals in different groupʹs were statistically analyzed using t. test and one way ANOVA. Our resultʹs showed that Boswellia resin consumption during lactationary period led to an enhancement of learning (P=0.03) and short term memory(P= 0.02) in the male offsprings. These positive results support the use of the herb mentioned by Iranian physicians in the past.
