ETIOLOGY AND PATHOLOGY OF VALVULAR HEART DISEASES

Valvular heart lesions are one of the most common heart problems in our country.ln this descriptive and prospective study, we evaluated 93 patients with valvular heart disease who were operated at the cardio-vascular center of Afshar hospital. All valvular specimens were sent for pathologic evaluation. Of the total 93 cases, AVR was done in 41 (44.1%) , MVR was done in 32 (34.4%), AVR + MVR was done in 14 (15.1%) , MVR + TVR was done in 4 (4.3%) and AVR + MVR + TVR was done in 2 (2.2%) patients. Pathology reports were rheumatic in 56 (60.2%) , degenerative in 32 (34.4%) and inilamatory in 4 (4.3%) patients. The most common cases of mitral valve disease were rheumatic ones, while the most common cases of aortic valve disease were degenerative ones.lt is concluded that in spite of modern prophylactic, diagnostic and therapeutic methods, rheumatic fever is the most common case of valve heart disease in our country.
