EFFECT OF HAZEL LEAF- CONCOCTION ON REDUCTION OF BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS IN NORMOGLYCEMIC RATS

Diabetes is a chronic, life- long and one of the most common diseases of the endocrine glands caused chiefly by a decrease in insulin secretion by the Beta cells of Islands of Langerhans . The symptoms include metabolic disturbances and protracted complications in the eves. kidneys, nerves and blood vessels. Since some people use the hazel- leaf decoction or ptisan for controlling their blood sugar levels and there is no reliable evidence indicating the efficacy of this herb, the researcher was motivated to test the effect of the said ptisan on rats and study the action of its mechanism in case of its efficacy. For this purpose, two groups of rats were selected and the experimental group was given 10`%, hazel- leaf decoction. The blood sugar level was measured for both the experimental and control groups using Auto - Analyser RA- 1000 on days 0,3,7 and 15. The research revealed that the 10`%, ptisan given orally had some hypoglycemic effects in normal rats. On days three and seven, blood glucose levels reduced significantly in the experimental rats as compared to the control group (P<0.001). Since unlike other herbal ptisans with similar hypoglycemic effects which have a bitter taste, the hazel- leaf ptisan is sweet and readily edible, it is advisable to test the effect of the said ptisan on diabetic rats and to separate and purify the effective substance or element of this decoction using modern techniques and means of analysis and purification.
