Regarding the importance of primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVO) , especially in children of high risk families and also regarding the important role of oxidized LDL (ox-LDL) in the atherosclerosis process, this study was carried out in order to evaluate LUL oxidation by measuring its main metabolites malondialdehyde (MDA) and conjugated diene (CUE) in children of high risk families in comparison with other children and adolescents. Patients hospitalized with premature myocardial infarction were selected by simple random sampling method and their `6-18 yearsʹ old children were included as the case group. The control group was randomly selected from neighbours of the case group matched for age and socioeconomic status but without family history of premature (ʹVI). In order to compare LDL oxidation in subjects with normal and abnormal serum lipid levels, four groups were considered i.e. subjects with and without hyperlipidemia in both the case and control groups. Each group consisted of 32 subjects. Venous blood samples were obtained in the fasting state (>12 hours). MDA and CDE were measured by spectrophotometry using molar absorbivity. Data was analyzed by SPSS/win using the student t, ANOVA, Ron Ferroni, Tukey HSD and Scheffe- Duncan tests. The mean MDA value in the case group was significantly higher than the control group (1.84 -+ 0.43 vs. 1.67 ± 0.41 (mio)mol/L, P=0.03) but this difference was not significant regarding (1W (0.50 +0.05 vs. 0.47 ± 0.04 mol/L , P> 0.05). The mean MDA level of the case group with hyperlipidemia (1.986 -± 0.516 mol/L) was significantly higher than the other three groups (P<0.05). The highest MDA value was found in boys with hyperlipidemia in the case group (2.03 0.2mot/L). Taking into consideration the increased susceptibility of LDL, to oxidation in the case group, especially in those with hyperlipidemia, more attention should be paid for preventing and controlling risk factors in them. It is therefore recommended that children, especially those at risk for premature CVO should perform regular physical activities and consume foods containing antioxidants such as vegetables , fruits, vegetables oils , certain spices and seasonings regularly.
