Determination of Relation between Size of Lower Third Molar Follicle and Histopatologic Condition in Patients that Refer to Maxillofacial Department of Shahed Dental School during 1380-81 years

Aim: Determination of relation between size of lower third molar and histopathologic condition in patients that refer for surgical extraction. Method and material: This descriptive study was performed on 106 patients referred to the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery in Shahed dental school. The total subject include 58 men (54.72%) and 48 woman (42.28%) who were categorized into two age groups of" younger than 20" and "20 through 30". After taking a periapical radiograph the longest possible width of the dental follicle was measured by means of a ruler. Finally all of the samples were referred for pathologic assays. Findings: 1-There was not any significant relationship between the size of follicle of lower third molar and pathologic conditions in the two age groups. 2-The mean longest possible width of the dental follicles in patients having pathologic lesions and those without any pathology were reported to be 2.47 and 1.85 mm, respectively. 3-Among 42 subjects with pathologic lesions 41 patients (67.61%) had dentigerous cysts and one patient (2.39%) had an odontogenic keratocyst. Conclusion It can conclusively be stated that in order to meticulously diagnose a pathologic lesion within a dental follicle with a normal one, a through evaluation of the excised tissue accompanied by an extracted tooth sound reasonably important.
