بحث از غايت‌شناسي، به‌ويژه مسئلة غايتمندي افعال الهي، از مباحث مهم در حوزة معارف ديني، مخصوصاً در علم كلام است. براي هر ذهن فعال و كنجكاوي، اين مسئله مطرح است كه آيا افعال الهي معلل به غرض و غايت است يا نه، به‌خصوص در حوزة آفرينش ـ كه مهم‌ترين فعل الهي استـ آيا مي‌توان براي آفرينش الهي غرضي ترسيم كرد؟ و اگر پاسخ مثبت است، آن غرض چيست؟ دانشمندان اسلامي پيرامون غايتمندي افعال الهي ديدگاه‌هاي متفاوتي مطرح كرده‌اند، برخي با توجه بر مباني آنها در پذيرش حسن و قبح عقلي، افعال الهي را غايتمند دانسته و نفي غايت در افعال الهي را مستلزم اشكالات عديده‌اي دانسته‌اند كه متكلمان اماميّه، معتزله و ماتريديه، جزوه اين گروه هستند. برخي ديگر، مانند اكثر اشاعره، با توجه به عدم پذيرش قاعدة حسن و قبح عقلي از طرف آنان، غايت در افعال الهي را نفي كرده‌اند. طايفه‌اي ديگر در مسئله، قائل به تفصيل شده‌اند، در نوشتارِ پيش‌رو، دلايل ديدگاه طوايف مختلف پيرامون غايتمندي افعال الهي مورد بررسي واقع مي‌شود.
