Relationships between Population Density and Agricultural Intensification in Iranian Rural Society

There are two main views about the population growth impact on development in general and the population density impact on agricultural intensification in particular. In the first view, it is assumed that the population density leads to the agricultural intensification, increased food security, and industrialization; while the second assumes that the population growth results in a declined level of life standards, and that the population density leads to soil erosion and environmental crises. Having illustrated the concerned scientistsʹ views, this paper studies the relationship between the population density and the agricultural intensification in 45085 Iranian villages. As the results indicate, the correlation between the biological density of population and the level of agricultural intensification has been positive and significant. A survey method of research was drawn on, and the test of hypotheses and the statistical relationships were also conducted through variance control in a non-experimental manner. The information gathering techniques included open interview, systematic observation, and census data analysis at the level of villages and agricultural operating units. Main data have been retrieved from the Iranʹs Village Database of the Rural Research Centre, and demographic data of the Iranian villages adopted from the General Censuses of Population and Houses in 1986 and 1996 as well as the Agricultural Censuses in 1988 and 1993.
