Heat Exchanger Network (HEN) retrofit is one of the powerful option for optimization of energy consumption in industrial units. The study of HEN retrofit commonly is considered plain tube exchangers to increase the heat recovery and energy saving in a process. The recent researches have proved that the installation of Heat Transfer Enhancement (THE) devices inside the tube of a shell-and tube heat exchanger increase the amount of heat trasfer between fluids. Using this technique can also be mitigated the fouling factor of exchangers inside the tubes. However, it is important to select the appropriate tube insert for an actual application without incurring any pressure drop penalty.
In this paper an algorithm for selection of THE devices is developed, so that, it can be applied to HEN rotrofiting, as an analysis based on pinch technology. By selecting appropriate enhanced devices, the amount of reduction in area of heat exchangers at targeting point is determined.
Combining the use of pinch technology and heat transform enhanceent technique can be considered as a state of the art, which is presented in this paper. This method has several advantages such as reducing the investment requirement for an energy saving and decreasing the fouling rate of exchangers in an oxisting netwok.
In an example and execution of developing software named "Pinch-THE", the effect of combined methods in economic performance of a retrofit projct is demonstrated. The result of this algorithm is examined in a case study.
