HBs Ag and Hepatitis C infection prevalence in prisoners of Sistan and Baloochestan province

Prisoners are one of groups that are susecptible to Hepatitis B & C especially addicted prisoners . There are many reports suggesting for higher prevalence of hepatitis B & C in prisoners than normal population. Because of this problem, present study was been performed in sistan & Baloochestan province. 191 case from Zahedan prison and 50 case from each of citiesʹ prisons (totally 441 cases) were selected incidentally. Then their blood samples were tested for HBs Ag and Anti HCV. HBs Ag and Anti HCV prevalence in these samples were 8.4% and 9.1% respectively . But in addicted cases these values were 25.9% and 29.6% respectively . HBs Ag prevalence in married and unmarried prisoners was 11% and 3.8% respectively (P<0.0001) but Anti HCV prevalence has no differrence in these two group. The highest infection rate was seen in Chabahar prisoners. HBs Ag and Heatitis C infection prevalence was been increased in higher senile groups. High prevalence of HBs Ag and Hepatitis C infection (as seen in this study) is in concordance with similar reports from Iran and other countries. Because of these results, Hepatitis B & C are important in prisons and some solution for reducing risk of these infections such as education and vaccination should be taken in consideration .
