Oral minoxidil is a medicine used to treat high blood pressure and when it is applied to the skin causes hair growth, therefore it is used in male androgenic alopecia treatment. For the sake of patient compliance, decreasing the first pass metabolism and also minimizing the adverse drug reactions, it seems logical to prepare a matix type transdermal therapeutic system for minoxidil. In this research polymeric films were prepared by solvent evaporation method, using different polymers such as Poly Vinyl Pyrolidon (PVP) and eudragits (RSPO, RLPO, E 100, and LI00). Dibutyle phthalate (DBP), glycerin and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG40o) were used as plasticizers. The effects of polymer amount and type as well as plasticizers and drug content on the release characteristics of minoxidil from patches were investigated using USP apparatus n and the drug concentration of the samples were determined by UV spectrophotometer. The results showed that an increase in the amount of the polymer and replacement of Eudragit RS with RL increased the drug release rate. The latter may be due to higher amounts of quaternary ammonium groups in Eudragit RL structure in comparison with Eudragit RS which makes the patch more permeable to dissolution medium. Hydrophilic plasticizers in contrast with hydrophobic ones increased the drug release rate. PVP caused higher drug release rates when used in combination with Eudragits. Ideal release kinetics may be obtained by changeng the RSPO: RLPO ratio.
