Gel Spinning of UHMWPE: Effect of Processing Parameters and Raw Materials on Fiber Structure

Mechanical properties of ultra high-modulus polyethylene fibers are related to the crystalline structure and extensive chain orientation in fibers direction. Physical properties and chemical structure of the commercial UHMWPE fibers were studied. The data obtained from the analyses indicate that fiber crystalline structure is orthorhombic with 153.8°C melting point and 90% crystallinity. UHMWPE fibers produced in our laboratory through a gel spinning process had a orthorhombic structure, crystallinity of 74% and 148.4"C melting point. The modulus of the produced fibers with 50% drawing ratio is about 87% modulus of the Spectra 900, Commercial fiber, with 1200 denier and its strength is about 74% of the Spectra 900 with 1400 denier.
