A common precipitated silica accompanied by carbon black was used to increase thc tear resistance and the strength properties of a butadiene rubber. The tear resistance improvement of the butadiene rubber with step by step substitution of carbon black with silica, and also the negative effects of this substitution on cure and process characteristics and its reinforcing properties have been investigated. The effects of the modification of silica surface have been also studied by using a silane coupling agent and the chemical reinforcement effects of silica/si lane have been studied with gradual substitution of carbon black with silica in presence of a sufficient amount of silane. Il is observed that using a reinforcing system of carbon black/silica/silane, would lead to a better reinforcement of butadiene rubber in com-parison to a system having just carbon black reinforcing agent, and so it is possible to obtain a desirable balance in the final vulcanizatc.
