Growth and function of root and shoot show close relations. Because of difficulties associated with root studies less information has been gathered a bout root compared to shoot and their relationships. Similar to the allometric relations between root organs, interactions between shoot and roots can also be characterized and quantified by allometric relationships. This study was conducted in 2001-2002 at the Agricultural College Research Greenhouse (ACRG), at the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. Twenty genotypes of chickpea were grown in cylindrial containers (10cm diameter and 30cm height).The experiment was arranged as a randomized complete block design with three replications. Root characteristics including: Taproot Length (TL), Total Root Length (TRL), Number of Lateral Roots (NLR), Root Area (RA), Root Volume (RV), Root Dry Weight (RDW), and important shoot characters: Height of Seedlings (HS), Leaf Area (LA), Leaf Dry Weight (LDW), Stem Dry Weight (SOW) and rates of Root/Shoot, LA/RA and RDW/RV were determined. Significant differences in TL, TRL, NLR, RA, RDW were found between these twenty genotypes. MCC358 and MCC447 genotypes had the highest and the lowest from a bove characters , respectively. RV, NLR, RA, RDW and RA had significant and positive correlation with TRL in two year experiments. The highest linear regression correlation between TRL and RA (r = 0.909) and between TRL and RV (r = 0.81) and between RV and RA (r = 0.82) and between TRL and NLR (r = 0.84) were found. Because RV, RA and RDW are easy to measure and have the highest correlation with the TRL parameter, therefore we can use the regression equations to estimate TRL and TL. These parameters are the major criterian for selection of drought resistant genotypes.
