Study on beet necrotic yellow vein virus and beet soil borne virus in northern Khorasan province

Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) the causal agent of Rhizomania is an economically important disease of sugarbeet belongs to the genus Benyvirus which is transmitted by Polymyxa betae. The main symptoms of Rhizomania include, Proliferation of small feeder roots, constricted toproots, vascular necrosis, chlorosis and upright foliage with elongated petioles and narrow leaf lamin. In 1999 and 2000 samples were collected from different fields in northern cities of the province such as Shirvan, Ghochan, Espharayen, Chenaran, Torbat- Hydariyeh, Ghaen, Sabzevar, Jovein, Fariman and Neyshaboor. To identify BNYVV in the samples, DAS - ELISA and dot immunobinding assay were performed, also confirmation tests such as soil baiting and preparing microscopic slides from lateral roots to detect resting spors of the fungus have been used. P. betae is also the vector of beet soil borne virus (BSBV), a member of pomovirus. To determine the presence of this virus a survey was made in Ghochan and Chenaran and the virus was detected in the collected samples in these regions. The first report on occurrence of BSBV in Iran has been already published .
