Chemical and digestible (ruminal and intestinal) characteristics of alfalfa silage treated with urea and sulphuric acid and its effect on milk production and composition of lactating cows

In order to determine the effect of urea and sulphuric acid on chemical and digestible (ruminal and intestinal) characteristics of alfalfa silage one experiment in three stage, was conducted. In the first stage, alfalfa was chopped and ensiled with urea (0.0, 0.5 and 1% of DM) and/or sulphuric acid (0.0, 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8%, vol/DM). Urea and sulphuric acid caused to increase silage DM and CP significantly (P< 0.05). In the second stage, digestible characteristics (ruminal and intestinal) of alfalfa silages (Ti: without urea and acid; T2: 0.05% urea; T3: 0.6% acid; T4: 0.05% urea + 0.6% acid) and alfalfa hay were determined using mobile nylon bag technique. Ruminal, intestinal and total tract digestibility were significantly influenced by the treatments (P< 0.05). At the third stage, alfalfa silages were (the second stage treatments) included in lactating dairy cow diets (50% of diet alfalfa, DM) and fed to eight lactating cows in a Latin square design (4x4) for 90 days. Samples of milk were collected at the end of each period. Blood samples were taken from jugular vein at 0.0, 2 and 4 hours after the morning feeding. Milk production, milk protein, DM, CP and MUN, DM1 and blood metabolites were not significantly influenced by the treatments.
