Knowledge management; why and wherefore about it

Drawn on existing definitions of knowledge management (KM), this article provides an analysis of the concept and compares it with information management. A brief account of the origin of KM and components of KM systems is followed by a discussion of the relevance of KM to the work of the library and information(LIS) profession and a comparison between KM and LIS. Criticisms leveled against the validity and workability of KM by prominent authors in the field comes after. The article concludes with an admonition to fellow LIS writers against hasty subscription to such ideas.
