Fundamentals and principals of security management in libraries

Although general public often considers libraries oases of quiet and decorum, they have their share of security problems. Security needs vary from one library to another and are dependent on staffing, physical setting, goals and .... Security is no accident. A comprehensive security program that has protection and preservation of collections, network, patrons and staffs over the long term as its primary goal is needed. Security procedures should be carefully thought out and discussed with all library administrators, staffs and other knowledgeable persons. At last the most important point is that, without proper education which targets both staff and patrons, security measures will be ineffective. Training should include role-playing and simulated emergencies to elicit and evaluate possible responses to threats.
