Periodicals management in the central libraries of the state universities of Iran

In this study, periodicals management situation in central libraries of the state universities is considered by using analytical survey method. The aim of this survey is consideration of periodicalsʹ section as one of the vita] sections of the central libraries of the state universities, and comparing findings with the standards of university libraries in order to find out deficiencies and functionality of this section of the library. Hypothesis of this survey is: periodicals management system in more than 50 percent of the university libraries are under standards. Considering the nature of the survey and dispersion of the studied population, data is gathered through questionnaire and interview. Gathered data are extracted and analysed with SPSS version 10. Achieving the aims of the survey and answering fundamental questions, descriptive statistical methods including frequency tables, calculating percentages, calculating statistical measures like mean and standard deviation is used. Extracted results from data analysis distinguishes present situation of the periodicals section management in university libraries. Comparing findings with the standards of the university libraries shows that the rate of consideration of standards in all different managerial fields of periodicals (organization, preservation and conservation, public services, usage of modem technology, and budget) except space consideration, is below standard level, so the hypothesis of this survey is approved. Last part of this survey contains necessary recommendations with attention to the existing deficiencies in this part of the university libraries. Performing these recommendations can help the libraries to reach an acceptable standard level.
