Thesaurus Application in Information Retrieval. (27 PP.)

Thesaurus are one of the most important tools for matching subject language of the information seekers and providers. In spite of theoretical discussions and emphasis on the role of thesaurus in information retrieval, they were mostly used for indexing and organization of information during ʹlast few years and less attention has been paid to the practical usage of them in the search process. Using literature review approach, the present paper intends to discuses three issues including advantages and disadvantages of using thesaurus in the search process; current approaches on thesaurus mainly used for search systems; and features and characteristics of desired theasaurus for information retrieval. Findings of the current studies indicate that although sometimes using existing traditional thesaurus can increase the recall of the information retrieval, some kind of thesaurus entitled "retrieval thesaurus" should be constructed to help users to find needed concepts and to conduct more effective searches. The paper also introduces some related prototypes.
